Crime has increased or the police are doing injustice?

The President asked at a function in the presence of the CJI and the Union Law Minister that if the country is developing then why there is a need for more jails? He was referring to the ever-increasing number of undertrial prisoners in the country.

After 70 years of independence, India's criminal to justice system stands in a strange place today. Where the number of prisoners undertrial is increasing, While sentenced prisoners are decreasing. Do the police also throw innocent people in jail? And in the absence of prompt action on bail in the courts, the innocent poor are deprived of their livelihood for months and out of basic rights, whose pains are suffered by their families.

According to the Union Home Ministry, the number of sentenced prisoners has decreased by 9.5% during 2016-21. While the number of undertrial prisoners has increased by 54.8% in the same period. By the end of 2021, four out of every five prisoners in the country were undertrial prisoners. Which simply means that in the last few years the police of the states have been misusing the power of law to file cases in the criminal act.

Sharing his experience, the President said that many times in remote poor areas of Odisha, families do not provide bail because the lawyer's fees will be used to sell the house and utensils. While expressing this sentiment, the President stared at nothing for about five seconds.

People in power should pay attention to his words See how this is a development that requires more prisons. Whether crime is increasing or the police holding hands of injustice and Imprisoning the innocent poor with impunity?
