Alternatives to increase agricultural production have to be considered
A vigilant society should thoroughly investigate, benchmark and test the short- and long-term effects of each change before adopting it. However, many times this precaution is overdone and the benefit of the new technology does not reach society for decades.
Genetically modified (GM) seed technology in agriculture has been opposed by a section, while the US, Brazil, Argentina and Canada have moved very quickly by adopt it.
The Vajpayee government started a revolution by allowing the sowing of GM seeds in cotton in 2002, adding 'Jai Vigyan' to the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan'. As a result, cotton production tripled over the next ten years to nearly four million bales.
Gujarat became the highest beneficiary state and India became the second largest exporter in the world. Another example is the leading countries in agriculture, which sparked a major revolution decades ago by adopting GM seeds in soybeans, potatoes, wheat and corn.
India has this positive example so only a special lobby should ignore the constant protests on this. Good aspects have to be considered to increase production.
